Looking Back on a Successful Annual Meeting and Ahead to More Educational Opportunities

Dr. Zimmerman

By Philip Schmitt, DO
AOAO President

Change is in the air! As I write this President's update we expect another dumping of snow in the Detroit area to go along with our already record cold winter. Spring will be here soon enough, the Affordable Care Act is now a fact of our practice life and our Academy continues to grow and evolve.

The AOA/ACGME residency/fellowship discussions continue and Lee Vander Lugt, D.O. will give us the latest information in his Executive Director update. One of the goals of our recently formed AOAO Foundation will be to self-fund fellowships for our orthopedic residency graduates. I invite you to begin your support of the Foundation by participating in this year's Postgraduate Seminar golf tournament in Dallas.

Dallas will be a wonderful host for our 54th Postgraduate program which again promises essential and relevant knowledge for the practicing orthopedic surgeon. Steve Morton, D.O., the CME Committee and session moderators have worked hard to bring us the most updated program possible.

The newly revamped AOAO website,, promises a fresh look and updated information for our membership. Please visit the site and offer your feedback on how to make it even better to suit your needs.
The Finance Committee (with endorsement of the Board) has been working hard to develop an investment policy. This policy is intended to guide our investment advisors, protect our financial investments and provide full transparency to our members. Any member interested in receiving a copy of this new policy may contact the AOAO headquarters office.

Finally, I recently reviewed a list that I will soon enough be joining: Past Presidents of the AOAO. Nearly half of the past Presidents in our 70+ year organization are still with us and many still practicing! I believe this shows that leadership in the AOAO starts in the early stages of our careers. I invite you all to participate in our organization and make it stronger.  Become a part of the change!

See you in Dallas!
