Looking Forward to Spring

Dr. Vander LugtBy Lee Vander Lugt, DO, FAOAO

By the time this issue of The Orthopod is available, I hope winter has dealt its last blow and you all are looking forward to spring activities!

As always, your Academy office remains very busy with many activities.  Finishing touches are being put on the Postgraduate Seminar to be held in Amelia Island, Florida on April 17 – 19, 2015.  Please visit the website for more information and to register.  This year the Annual Meeting will be held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado on October 15 – 17, 2015.  We used that same venue three years ago and received excellent feedback on the location.  I look forward to a great meeting at this fabulous site.
Your Board of Directors takes very seriously the governance of this organization.  A recent weekend retreat in Dallas focused on strategic planning updates, Board member orientation, the single accreditation system and collaboration with other like minded orthopedic organizations.

All of our 43 orthopedic residency programs are focusing on the transition to the single accreditation system.  Multiple meetings and forums have already taken place with more to come, equipping OPTIs and our Program Directors as this process moves forward.  The executive office stands ready to support our programs as necessary during this time of transition.

I am proud that Richard Howard, DO was recently selected as the Osteopathic member on the ACGME Orthopaedic Review Committee.  You can read more about Dr. Howard in this issue of The Orthopod.
The AOAO continues to remain active in the advocacy arena in regards repeal of the SGR and the attempts to eliminate the 10 and 90 day global payments by new regulation.  We continue to support our surgical colleagues in these areas.

As we move forward in all of these initiatives, I encourage members to get involved in Academy activities. Consider serving on committees or speaking at a conference. Not only will your participation benefit the Academy but it will also help you attain points toward the Award of Fellow.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Florida.
