It was an honor and a privilege to serve as the President of the AOAO.  Simply, 2011 was a year of change for our Academy.

The Academy experienced two successful meetings this past year with record setting attendance from our membership as well as strong participation from industry. The first annual Residents and Fellows Conference was developed to highlight the research of osteopathic orthopedic residents and fellows.  There were twelve dynamic presentations from our mentees that stimulated great conversation.  We hope to build on this in the future and continue to engage our members’ interest in this new endeavor.

Last year also saw a reorganization that brought the management of our organization to Richmond, Virginia under Ruggles Service Corporation. In 2009, Ruggles was hired to partner with the Academy for meeting and website management, as well as dues collection.  Based on the success of the collaborative relationship, we have expanded our partnership.  Now Ruggles handles all administrative and operational functions of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.  We hope this partnership, under the supervision of our Executive Director, Dr. Lee Vander Lugt, will continue to move our Academy forward with positive growth in the years to come.

Was this enough to tackle in one year?  Certainly not!  In addition to all the mentioned efforts, the AOAO Board developed and began the implementation of a Strategic Plan.  As part of that plan, our committees were reorganized and decisions about the direction of our group’s focus and commitments in the future were made.  This new direction was developed to assist the Academy’s committees and our Board of Directors, under the leadership of Dr. Gary S. Ulrich, with the advancement of our Academy and its mission to serve our membership.
