Welcome from The President

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics. The site of this year’s meeting will be The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado. All of our social and educational functions will take place in this venue.

CME Committee Chair Dr. Steven Morton and the session moderators have developed a high quality educational program. We are especially pleased to have Eric Heiden, MD as our Keynote Speaker on Saturday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m. Dr. Heiden is a renowned Olympian, author and now orthopedic surgeon. His lecture, entitled “Sports Performance Medicine, an Insider’s Perspective”, is sure to interest all in attendance.

We are also pleased to host the second Annual Residents and Fellows Conference on Thursday, October 25 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. where the top selected papers will be presented orally. I hope you will make it a point to attend this session to support our residents and fellows. Scientific paper and poster winners will also be recognized.

Also plan to attend the Annual AOAO Business Meeting on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 7:30 a.m. Members will have the opportunity to elect members of the Board of Directors for the coming year.

I will conclude my service in this role at the Annual Meeting in Colorado where First Vice-President, James Pollifrone, DO, FAOAO, will assume the office of President. This has been a very productive year, and I am satisfied that many of the objectives set forth at the start of my term have been realized.

Meeting Information

Educational Objective

The goal of this year’s program is to provide orthopedic surgeons with an update on current techniques and controversies in orthopedics. Leaders in the field will debate and discuss selected topics so that practicing orthopedists will have theknowledge to further develop their skills.

Upon completion of this conference, participants will have learned:

• to be more familiar with current techniques and controversies in orthopedics;
• to better understand the indications, techniques, complications and outcomes of various surgical procedures within their specialty.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for osteopathic surgeons in the field of orthopedics, orthopedic residents, allied health and any physician interested in the practice of orthopedics.

Statement of Need

Responses from our prior conferences identify the need for a greater understanding of specific aspects of orthopedic surgery within the specialties of Shoulder and Elbow, Trauma, Hand, Sports, Pediatrics, Spine, Foot and Ankle, and Adult Reconstructive and Arthritis Surgery. An afternoon General Session has been added to feature renowned speakers regarding the varied roles of an orthopedic surgeon as they relate to healthcare delivery systems and industry that are performed in addition to treating patients and performing surgery.

Accreditation

The AOA Council on Continuing Medical Education has approved this program for 23 hours of AOA Category 1-A CME credits.

Resident/Fellow Session

Upon completion of this session, the participants will have learned new research in multiple areas of Orthopedic Surgery, presented by Orthopedic Residents and Fellows in training.  The material will include new concepts in patient care, new surgical techniques, and new methods of rehabilitation. 

The participants will also learn through the presentation of research papers, how current methods of care have been shown to be either successful or unsuccessful in improvement of patient care.

An additional feature of this session will be commentary by experienced Orthopedic Surgeons, with special expertise in the subspecialty area of presentation, who will give insight into the value of the material presented.

As a result of learning this material, participants will be able to provide improved care for their patients.

Spine

Upon completion of this session, participants will have learned new techniques in the treatment and management of anterior cervical and posterior thoracic and lumbar surgeries. They will also have learned to deal with adverse events as well as techniques for minimally invasive surgery. Participants will also understand how to integrate a spine practice with a health system, business aspects of the spine practice and updates in legal issues.

Shoulder and Elbow

Upon completion of this session, participants will have learned updates in the latest techniques in treatment for rotator cuff repairs, treatments in bicep repair including the ream-and-run method of shoulder surgery.

Pediatrics

Upon completion of this session, participants will have the latest techniques and trends in pediatric surgery dealing with infection, low back pain, clubfoot, fractures and trauma.

Hand

Upon completion of this session, participants will have learned the latest treatments and surgical techniques in scaphoid fractures, carpometacarpal arthroplasty of the thumb and small joints, dealing with elbow pain. Intramedullary nail fixation options and the platelet-rich plasma uses will also be discussed. Participants will also learn how to increase their efficiency in the medical office and operating room as well as new techniques in how technology can assist their practice.

Adult Reconstructive and Arthritis Surgery

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to discuss replacement options for total hip replacement and the use of robotics in surgery for total hip and knee. Techniques for minimally invasive hip surgery will also be discussed.

Trauma

Upon completion of this session, the participants will have learned the latest techniques in treating hand, pelvic and ankle fractures related to trauma, as well as managing orthopedic surgery in extreme environments. Participants will also learn new surgical techniques in complex amputation as well as the management of upper extremity injuries and nonunions.

General Session

Upon completion of this session, the participants will have learned the latest techniques in managing clavicle and proximal humeral fractures and treatment of endoscopic gluteus medius repairs in hip arthroplasty.

Foot and Ankle

Upon completion of this session, the participants will be able to:

1. utilize new techniques in plantar plate injuries of the first metatarsophalangeal joint;
2. identify new surgical techniques for ankle instability and osteochondral lesions of the talus;
3. develop new techniques for treating metatarsal fractures; and
4. identify new options for Lisfranc injuries.

General Session: Maintaining an Independent Orthopedic Surgery Practice

Upon completion of this session, the participants will have learned new techniques in addressing adhesive capsulitis, hand infections, bisphosphonate induced fractures of the femur and pain management. Participants will also learn challenges in treating patients who have experienced trauma in mass casualty events and new information about using locum tenens in their practice.

2. understand new options for ACL reconstruction;
3. understand new treatments for proximal and distal biceps tendon and hip disorders.
