AOAO CME Committee Update

Steven Morton, DO, FAOAO
Chair, CME Committee

Dr. Eric Heiden at the Annual MeetingHave you been to an Academy meeting lately?  If not, you don’t know what you have been missing! Your CME Committee and Board have been working diligently to provide AOAO members with outstanding educational opportunities at our meetings, and we encourage you to attend.

To improve your experience, we have scheduled concurrent sessions to help provide diversity and opportunity so that you have choices for your education. We are constantly trying to add more CME with cadaver labs and breakout sessions to maximize your credits. The Committee, with support of the Board, is looking to offer dynamic and professional keynote speakers at our meetings. During the Annual Meeting in October, I am personally excited to have Dr. Eric Heiden, world speed skating champion, orthopedic surgeon, and team physician for the U.S. Olympic speed skating team and team physician of last year’s Tour de France winning BMG Professional Bike riding team, share his experiences with us at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.

Additionally, in efforts to continue improving, we review the evaluation results from each meeting and try to improve the process for the next meeting.  If you haven’t been involved as a moderator or speaker, you may not be aware of how much time and effort is involved with pulling the whole conference together.  We work with the moderators to secure speakers and objectives, with speakers to obtain lecture titles and slides for the syllabus, with the AOA to receive accreditation, and with vendors for financial support.  Our volunteer moderators, speakers and committee members sacrifice time and energy for the betterment of our academy and I would like to recognize all they do. Based on our post meeting evaluations, we are improving our educational offerings every year.  These evaluations are critical to our success.  We cannot offer improvement for our membership without its input, either positive or negative.  I would like to encourage everyone to fill out the evaluations, and thank those that have provided the Academy with feedback in the past.

If you wish to give a lecture, have a desire to moderate a session, or even participate at the committee level, please contact the administrative office. I can only affect change if I get member feedback both positive and negative. Our goal is to provide outstanding educational opportunities at each of our meetings. As a reminder, you are required to attend one Annual and one Postgraduate meeting every three years. Check your calendars, check your CME requirements and totals and plan to attend a future meeting. We look forward to seeing you there!
