Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
Royal Oak, MI
Bio
As a fellowship trained hand and upper extremity surgeon, I will moderate the Hand Section. After completing fellowship at The Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center - I became partner of a multi-specialty private orthopedic surgery practice in Metro-Detroit. While our lectures will remain rooted in the science and practice of upper extremity care, we’re adding a unique twist by introducing each topic through the lens of a historical U.S. president who faced a relevant condition. In addition to the faculty of surgeons, we include a certified hand therapist to add depth of perspective for our panel discussions. With the conference near Washington, D.C., this blend of history and modern surgical insight aims to educate—and hopefully inspire.

My Orthopaedic training and shoulder fellowships were at the Columbia University, New York Orthopaedic Hospital. In addition I had hand and microvascular fellowships. I practiced for 43 years in the original San Francisco hand surgery office started by Sterling Bunnell and ran a fellowship for shoulder and elbow training for 30 years. During that entire time, my practice partner was H Relton McCarroll, Jr, MD.
In 1982, 28 of us form the American Shoulder Elbow Shoulder as an international group to advance our field of interest. Dr Rockwood put me on the Publications committee with the AAOS and we were able to advance the educational teaching with the first and 2nd editions of the Shoulder and Elbow Orthopaedic Knowledge Update and as the ASES grew a Journal was started. My first fellow, Andrew Green became the associate editor for shoulder. and elbow for the JBJS This was his accomplishment, not mine for he taught me much more during his year with me than I did for him. It was Dr Kasim that aught me that DOs knew the anatomy as well or sometimes better than many MD applicants for she was one of our stars.
In the beginning of my practice, the were no computers, only diazo slides and rotary telephones. We have come a long way with arthroscopy and arthroplasty. My interest were primarily in the arthroplasty and revision field for that is what came my way
After 43 years of practice as an orthopaedic shoulder surgeon, I retired in 2019. As I have not had the privilege of training with a few of you, I would like to share with you some my journey medicine has provided me throughout these years of growth and change.
